Building Your Business Doesn’t Require a PhD

One of my friends sent me a link to an article the other day that got me thinking. I have heard the same thing from so many prospective clients too and what is going on here?

Here’s the short version of the article:

“I am so frustrated with my VA, she keeps missing things.” Or more commonly in this biz, “I have worked with 3 VA’s and I still haven’t found the right person.”

The post goes on to say that this is a red flag and goes deeper into the conversation. She specifically them for examples of why they are having this issue.

What she most often uncovers is that the issue is that the client doesn’t have a strategic business plan to build their business and they end up blaming the VA for the lack of success or progress.

I couldn’t agree more!

How do you get from point A to point B without a roadmap?

You can’t without getting lost. One of the most important things you need is to have a strategic plan in place to run your business and here’s the good news:

Building your business doesn’t require a PhD

It’s really quite simple: it’s is all about getting back to basics, your commitment, and being consistent.

All it takes is a simple strategy:

→ A website to showcase your services and/or product(s)

→ A plan in place where you create high-quality content for your website and social media…

→ Automate your content marketing so you don’t waste time doing it all yourself.

→ Make more offers = more sales

→ A strategic email marketing plan in place where you stay top of mind

Do you need a fancy website? Nope.

Do you need to be out there 24/7 selling your stuff everywhere online? Nope.

It’s all about following this simple strategy that really works and no, it’s not rocket science either.

You can get the basics from education like sales training that could provide you with strategies to get started

Stop thinking that you have to be everywhere and all things to all people. Just stick to the basics and remember to be yourself. Listen closely to your soul and find your voice. You’ll know when you do because things will start to happen.

Website + Opt-in + Automated Marketing + Consistent Content Creation = Success

The most important thing you have to remember is that it takes commitment and it (success) doesn’t just happen magically overnight.

I heard this originally from people I respect as internet marketers and I have seen it happen with my own eyes.

The people who end up being successful in this business master the basics and they keep on doing it because it works. They don’t give up when it seems tough and the results aren’t what they would like. They know that they are in it for the long term and just keep at it.

It’s time for all of us to get back to the basics and stick with the plan.

Entrepreneur Mindset: Learn from the past but don’t dwell on it…

In business and in life we all learn valuable lessons.

Some easy and some hard…

I’ve found that it is important to take the lessons I’ve learned and use them wisely to grow and get better at what I do.

The trick is to make sure that you learn from the past and don’t end up dwelling on it for long.

In short…learn the lesson, tuck it away and move on.

I’ve made many mistakes in my career and life. Divorce, gotten fired, worked with the wrong people to name just a few. A couple years ago, I found myself wildly successful with a huge team and a big list of clients.

I was miserable…I was working like a dog and nobody was happy.

I ended up burnt out, firing a good portion of my team and my clients. Then I took a rest so I could see what wasn’t working and how to fix that so it wouldn’t happen again.

I learned from those mistakes I made…working with clients who I couldn’t please no matter what, the wrong people on my team and not having the right systems in place.

One by one I tackled those things and grew my business back to a more manageable level.

Now I have a small but mighty team – there are 5 of us. We work with great clients who are easy to please and do the work required of them. And most of all, everyone is happy.

Yes, we still get a few clients who aren’t the right fit but we are quick to recognize this, finish our work with them and politely send them on their way.

When I started doing this, I realized how much easier and more fun work became.

I’ve learned to to take the lessons from yesterday and use them to my advantage.

You know…those successes, failures, mistakes or whatever they may be for you.

Use them to your advantage.

Avoid dragging them around and allowing them to weigh you down or stop your progress.

Instead look at them as gifts, as an opportunity for a fresh start.

What ever they may be, use them as lessons or as guide posts on your journey as an entrepreneur. They are truly gifts that can help you to get you to where you want to go.

I know, I’ve been on both sides. I’ve wallowed in misery, I’ve cried, I’ve thought about quitting when things got tough.

And I’m certain I’ll make more mistakes and have more things I need to learn on this entrepreneurial journey.

I will pick myself up and use them to my advantage and I urge you to do the same thing. Learn from the past, use it to your advantage.

In this post, I share my heard learned lessons learned about how to use teamwork to accomplish more in your business.

I was listening to Darren Hardy’s daily video about success the other day, he was kicking off a series on team building and he mentioned that teams should emulate ducks…

He threw out a statistic that ducks have 71% more range when they fly in formation.

Okay, so you’re probably wondering what does this has to do with this post on how to use teamwork to accomplish more…right?

Stay with me and I’ll explain why and how when built right, teams can accomplish more.

Trust me, I’ve got a lot of experience around this.

I’ve been managing teams virtually for close to 10 years now and I’ve managed and been part of many in the corporate world for over 15 years. So you could say I’ve seen the good and the bad.

Let’s get back to the ducks…

When they fly together, they take turns leading and their formation creates an updraft which gives them an increase of 71% more flying range (they can fly 71% further) than if they flew solo.

Are you flying solo and wouldn’t you like to be able to accomplish 71% more?

Yes, it’s the same in your business…

You can accomplish so much more when working as a team than flying solo.

And if you allow your team to take turns leading you really begin to tap into their strength.

Smart leaders allow their team members to lead in their areas of expertise.

I know I can design a website, but my lead tech/designer Valerie does it so much faster and more efficiently than I can. So I hand over the lead to her when we build websites for our clients.

I tell her where we want to go and she gets us there.

A smart leader knows when to ask questions and hand off tasks to those who are the experts and let go of control.

I’m working with a client right now who has a great team but won’t let go of control and allow them to work independently…

Every person that they work with has to see her at least 1-2 times before being handed off.

So when she is away from her business, the rest of her team isn’t as productive as they could be and no new clients can work with them unless they have seen the client first.

A bottleneck has been created, the client is frustrated and overworked.

Her brilliant team is also frustrated and worst of all the client experience isn’t what it could be.

Worst of all…they’re losing money as a result of the bottleneck.

The solution is simple…

The client needs to let go and allow the team to lead in their respective areas of expertise.

And understand that there is more than one way to serve their clients well.

When you build systems, tasks, and operating procedures you create a way to guide your team to accomplish projects for you.

Trust me I know first hand about this.

I’ve worked with teams and with many other clients who won’t let go.

And frankly, it was exhausting.

I’ve had big teams that weighed me down because they did not have the right procedures and guidance.

I’ve been able to find a better balance with a smaller team.

We’ve got clear operating procedures, timelines, and a kick-ass project management system that gives me the desired results without micromanaging them.

And as a result, my team knows what to do and when…and they are happy about having that freedom.

Gone are the days of doing it all myself.

No more burnout and frustration from trying to be and do all things I’m not loving or suited to do.

I’m in my zone of genius working on testing new strategies to create better results. I’m better off measuring performance, tweaking systems, and developing new strategies.

My team is happier behind the scenes handling the implementation.

Lesson learned…

Using teamwork to accomplish more has allowed me to be happier and have the freedom to do what I love.

My business is flourishing.

So let me ask you…

Are you a lone ranger…trying to do it all by yourself?

Are you tired, frustrated and burned out?

Are you the control freak, the person causing a bottleneck and afraid to let go?

Or are you just drifting along, never really doing anything to accomplish your goals?

Take a hard look at yourself and your management style…you might need to let go and use teamwork to accomplish more in your business.

Entrepreneur Mindset: Healthy Habits For A Happier And More Successful You

In this post I show you why it is important to build healthy habits for a happier and more successful you.

When I sit down and write my goals for the year I always include a section to list my health goals. It’s important to me that I live a happy and balanced life…it’s why I left the corporate world and became an entrepreneur.

Many of you don’t know that when I started out on this great entrepreneurial endeavor I got diagnosed with Cancer.

It wasn’t just an easily solve-able Cancer either.

Nope, it requited surgery, chemo radiation…the whole 9 yards. And it required me to cope with the side effects and healing for over a year. And I did not let it stop me from my course of building my business – I’ll save that for another story later…

One of the lessons it did teach me is that my health was important and that I needed to have balance in my life to be healthy, happy and successful on my terms.

That is why I add that section to my yearly goal settings and why I place importance on building those healthy habits.

Let’s talk about what that means…

Did you know that your daily habits impact not only your health but your outlook and your ability to be successful?

That’s why so many books have been written about creating morning routines, habits, meditation and so on….

I’ve found a couple of easy habits that you should consider adding to your daily routine.

Habit #1: Eating

You’ve probably heard this before…Food is medicine

Science has proven what we eat impacts both our health and our brains.

Habit #2: Movement

Daily movement will life your spirits and give your brain a needed boost.

Take time during the day to get up and move around to stimulate your brain and get in your exercise. You’ll also reduce your stress levels which also impact your health and outlook.

Your mind is one of the biggest factors in your success.

You have the power to guide it.

Your habits, how your nourish yourself both mentally and physically all impact your daily performance.

What are you allowing into your mind and body?

Take a look and make an assessment…is it time to change your habits.

In this post I’m talking why happiness is a daily choice, not only does it help you feel better but it helps you to be more successful.

Now you might think I’m crazy but…

I’ve worked with all types of entrepreneurs and small business owners so I’ve gotten to see how having a good state of mind positively affects building a successful business.

As entrepreneurs and small business owners we wear a lot of hat plus we are responsible for many things.

Not just the bottom line, managing our teams, marketing…the list goes on and on.

We are responsible for our own motivation and our mindset.

Having the right mindset plus a healthy amount of motivation makes it possible for us to accomplish more in our work days.

It’s all too easy to forget the mindset part and how crucial it is to have the right energy to attract clients and build your business. Without it, having the best marketing funnels, the biggest social media following or huge list will work in your favor.

You see your mindset permeates everything you do…I’ve see it in action many times working with clients.

Being happy is an important part of this.

Yeah you might be thinking…I’ve got all these things to worry about…I don’t have the time to make happiness a daily choice.

Well I’m laying it out for you, if you don’t make happiness part of your daily routine it will affect your business.

Are you wondering why you haven’t gotten to where you want to be?

It might just be time to take a look inside and see what is really holding you back.

Don’t make these mistakes:

Putting your happiness off for another day…now is the only time.
Getting locked into other’s ideas of happiness…ending up living a life or working a job that you didn’t choose
Trying to impress others, putting on a false face…instead of being genuinely happy.

Your happiness is a daily choice, here a few things to remember and help you get on with being happy every day.

It comes from inside of you…it’s a state of mind
It’s a choice you can make with a little help
Practicing gratitude is a good way to start the the happiness flowing inside of you.
Count your blessings, look for the good and focus on all that you have right now

Create a morning ritual that supports your happiness and build a foundation for a better day.

Wake up and immediately as you are coming into consciousness take time to focus on the good
Find time to meditate in the morning – even 5 or 10 minutes can make a difference in the rest of your day
Practice kindness – let someone close to you know how much you mean to them
Journal daily – start by writing everything you are grateful for
Read something positive – turn off the TV, censor what you chose to read and instead find something uplifting and motivational to start your day.
Get up and move! Studies show that getting in exercise will lift your mood.

Happiness is a daily choice you get to make and building a morning routine can do wonders for the rest of your day.

Start Creating The Road Map to Your Future

How do you plan your future? I always start to think about goal setting for next year when it starts getting close to the 4th quarter.

I find it is much easier to plan a vacation than it is to plan my future.

When I go on a road trip I either use Mapquest or Google maps to figure out how long it takes and the best way to get there. Then I start using other tools like Yelp, Urbanspoon, and Google to start searching out places to go and where to eat.

→ When do you start thinking about the future and your goals?

→ What do you use to plan and visualize your dreams and goals?

→ Do you write them down and follow them like you do the directions to get to your destination?

The surprising thing is that many people don’t do any of this.

Or if they do, they write them down and neglect to look at them on a regular basis or maybe even wait until it is getting close to the end of the year when they are thinking about next year’s goals.

Your level of success in life is directly proportional to your level of planning and control.

Writing your goals and plans and ideas makes them more real.

Every step, even the tiniest ones you take towards those goals increases the chance that you will actually achieve them. It can be as simple as writing a list and taping it to your bathroom mirror where you can see them.

Or, if you really want to have fun, create a vision board.

I’ve been creating vision boards myself for the last 5 years and every year I pick a theme for the year and the whole board revolves around that. For 2013 I picked Systematize, Organize and Delegate as my theme.

I had a blast working on it in December – I am secretly a crafting junkie so this gave me a outlet to let my creative juices flow!

I keep the whole pile of my boards in my office where I can see them daily with the most current one on top.

And it isn’t an accident that everything I have been working on and accomplishing in the past 3 has all been related to those 3 areas. It’s the power of subliminal suggestion and the fact that I chose three things that I knew would really take both myself and my business to the next level.

As a result, I now find that creating systems and problem solving are much easier. I’m building my team and creating systems to train and delegate to them that are really beginning to work well.

Here’s a quick look at my vision board process:

→ September-October: Start thinking about what I want to accomplish in 2014 and decide on what my overall theme is.

→ October-November: Collect Magazines and brochures, rip out pages of things that pertain to my overall theme

→ December: Go shopping for my vision board and any kind of embellishments I want to add to my board

→ The last week in December: Write out my goals and create my vision board

Take some time, think about where you want to go, and don’t wait to start building that road map. You’ll find that it makes the journey that much easier.
