Key Takeaways
- A testimonial tells people you’re good. A case study shows them how you got someone a result, and that’s what helps a prospect decide.
- Every case study needs three parts: where your client started, what you did together, and what changed.
- One case study I wrote in 2013 was still bringing a client 5% of his website traffic six years later.
- With AI, I write one or two case studies every week. A skill writes them up right after client work, and a Friday sweep of my recorded calls pulls out the rest of the stories.
You have happy clients. You probably have a folder of kind words they’ve sent you. And when a prospect is deciding whether to work with you, most of that sits there doing nothing.
That’s because a testimonial on its own asks people to take someone’s word for it. A case study walks them through what actually happened. When a prospect reads about someone who had their exact problem and got out of it, they stop wondering whether you can help. They can see it.
Why Are Case Studies Better Than Testimonials?
Put yourself in your prospect’s shoes for a minute. You’re choosing between two people. One has a nice quote on their sales page. The other has the story of a client who had your problem, what they worked on together, and how the client’s business looks now.
Which one would you call?
A testimonial says “she’s great.” A case study says “here’s how she did it, and here’s what changed.” It explains your process without a bulleted list of features. It shows your approach works in more than one situation. And it builds trust faster, because people relate to a story in a way they never relate to a claim.
What Should a Case Study Include?
Every case study I write has three parts. I think of them as before, during and after.
Before. Where was your client when they came to you? Use the words they used. “I was working 70 hours a week and couldn’t take a vacation” lands harder than “they wanted better work-life balance.”
During. What did you do together? This is where your process shows up, so be specific about the steps, not just the outcome.
After. What changed? Numbers help when you have them: hours saved, revenue, leads, clients. So does the client’s own reaction in their own words.
Pick a client whose starting point looks like the people you want more of. The closer the match, the more your prospect sees themselves in it.
How Long Does a Good Case Study Keep Working?
Longer than you’d think.
In May 2013 I wrote a case study for a client’s website called “Successful Stories of Couples Who Healed From Infidelity.” Six years later it was still one of the five most visited pages on his site, bringing in about 5% of all his traffic every month.
A social post is gone in a day. A good case study keeps answering the question every prospect has, “will this work for someone like me?”, for years.
How Do You Find Case Study Material Without Extra Work?
Case studies used to be hard for me. I’d have to set up an interview with a client, ask the right questions and then find time to write the whole thing up. Most of the time it just didn’t happen.
Now, with AI, I write case studies all the time, and it’s easy because of a two-part system.
The first part happens while I’m working. Whenever I do work for a client, I stop and run my case study skill in Claude. It goes through all the work we did together on that task and writes up the before, during and after. It takes a few minutes, and every single week I do at least one or two of them.
The second part happens on Fridays. I record every call I have in Fathom, with clients, students and even prospective clients. On Fridays another skill sweeps all of those calls, pulls the stories out and writes them up. They all land in my client stories folder.
That folder is where my content starts now. Anytime I write an article, I tell my AI blog post writer to look in that folder for stories it can add. Same thing when I build a new page on my website, put together a training or film a video. I always have it scan the folder and pull stories in first.
Storytelling is one of the biggest things that takes your content from sounding like an AI wrote it to sounding like a real person. That’s one of the biggest reasons you need case studies. AI shouldn’t make up your stories. It should work from what you and your clients actually said.
And the case studies themselves go everywhere. They get their own page, they go on my product pages and they show up all through my marketing.
If you want to see how I set up my call recordings, here’s how I turn every call into content, testimonials and follow-ups.
How Do You Turn a Case Study Into More Content?
One good case study can become a lot more than a page on your website. Use it as a story in your next video. Turn the before and after into a social post. Send it to your email list as “what happened when…”. Add a short version to your sales page next to the offer it proves.
Write it once, and let it work everywhere.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a case study in marketing?
It’s the story of how you helped a specific client: where they started, what you did together and what changed. It shows prospects your process works instead of just telling them.
How is a case study different from a testimonial?
A testimonial is a short quote from a happy client. A case study tells the full before, during and after, so a prospect can see how you got the result.
How long should a case study be?
Long enough to tell the before, during and after with specifics. For most coaches, consultants and course creators that’s a few hundred words on a page, plus shorter versions for social posts and emails.
Can AI write my case studies?
Yes, as long as it works from what really happened. I have one skill that writes a case study from the work I just did with a client, and another that pulls stories from my recorded calls every Friday. AI organizes and drafts. The story has to be real.
