Key Takeaways
- Short-form video isn’t a YouTube thing or an Instagram thing. I post the same shorts on YouTube, Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn.
- Every topic on my content plan gets a long video and a short video, planned together from the start.
- Sometimes I give AI my long-form script and ask for a short-form script, and that shows me other angles worth their own shorts.
- A short works when it has a hook, one idea and a payoff. The number of shorts matters far less than picking the right topics.

My short-form video strategy is simple: every topic gets a long video and a short video, and I post the short everywhere. YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, every single one. The part that makes it work isn’t the platform or how many shorts you make. It’s getting the topic right.
A lot of advice treats short-form video like its own separate job, with its own ideas, its own schedule and its own platform. That’s not how I do it. My shorts come from the same plan and the same topics as everything else I create.
Where Should You Post Short-Form Video?
Post your short-form videos on every platform where your audience is. I use the same shorts on YouTube, Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn.
I don’t make shorts for one platform. A good short works anywhere, because the thing that makes it good is the idea, not the app. Posting the same short everywhere means one piece of work shows up in front of four different audiences.
How Do You Plan Short-Form Video?
You plan short-form video at the same time you plan your long videos, so every topic comes with both.
When I build my content plan, I always have it give me a long video and a short video for each topic. The long one covers the whole topic. The short one gets one idea across fast. Because they’re planned together, the short never feels like an afterthought, and it points back to the same offer as the long one.
Sometimes I don’t even plan the short up front. I give AI my long-form script and ask it to write a short-form script from it. Then I look at what comes back and think, maybe there are other angles here. Maybe this topic deserves more than one short. That’s often where my best shorts come from.
What Makes a Short-Form Video Work?
A short-form video works when it has three parts: a hook, one idea and a payoff.
- Hook. Grab attention in the first few seconds with a bold statement, a question or a problem your viewer recognizes.
- One idea. Keep it to a single point. If you have two ideas, you have two shorts.
- Payoff. Deliver what the hook promised and leave the viewer with something they can use.
That structure is the same whether the short is 20 seconds or a minute, and whether it’s on YouTube or LinkedIn.
How Many Shorts Should You Make?
Make as many as the topic has real angles for, and don’t chase a number. What matters is making sure the topics are right.
A short on the wrong topic doesn’t help you, no matter how many you post. A short on the right topic, one your audience cares about and that leads to what you sell, keeps working for you. That’s why my short-form strategy starts in my content plan, where every topic is chosen because it ties back to an offer.
What To Do Next
Start with your next topic, not your next short.
- Pick the right topic. Choose one your audience cares about that leads to one of your offers.
- Plan the long and the short together. Put both on your content plan.
- Ask AI for the short-form script. Give it your long-form script and look for extra angles in what comes back.
- Post it everywhere. YouTube, Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where should I post short-form video?
Everywhere your audience is. I post the same shorts on YouTube, Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn. A good short works on any platform because the idea is what makes it good.
Should short-form video come from my long-form videos?
It works best when it does. Plan a long video and a short video for each topic, or give AI your long-form script and ask it for a short-form version. Both keep your shorts tied to the same topic and offer.
What makes a short-form video work?
A hook in the first few seconds, one idea, and a payoff that delivers what the hook promised. If a short has two ideas, split it into two.
How many short-form videos should I make per topic?
As many as the topic has real angles for. Picking the right topics matters far more than the number of shorts you post.
